Aligners are clear orthodontic devices that help correct tooth alignment. Increasingly popular due to their discretion and convenience, they are a viable alternative to traditional orthodontic appliances with metal wires and brackets. Dental aligners, also known as “aligners,” are made of clear medical plastic and are custom-made for the patient.
The operation of aligners is based on a series of clear templates that are changed at regular intervals, usually every two weeks. Each template is slightly different from the previous one and applies controlled pressure on the teeth, promoting their gradual movement to the desired position. These devices are designed to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems, including tooth crowding, spacing, and malocclusions such as open, crossed, or deep bite. One of the main advantages of aligners is their discretion. Unlike traditional braces, they are nearly invisible, making them a popular choice among adults and young people who prefer not to have visible metal braces. In addition, aligners are removable, which means they can be removed during meals and for teeth cleaning, making oral hygiene easier than with fixed braces. Another advantage is comfort. Because they are custom-made for each patient, aligners tend to cause less irritation to the gums and mouth than metal wires and brackets. Treatment with aligners, however, requires diligence on the part of the patient: aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day for best results. Despite their many advantages, aligners are not suitable for all types of orthodontic problems. In more complex cases, traditional braces or combination treatments may be necessary. In addition, although they are removable, their effectiveness depends on the consistency with which they are worn. Patients who disregard this rule risk prolonging treatment time or compromising results.
Aligners represent a major innovation in the field of orthodontics. They offer an effective, discreet and convenient solution for those who wish to correct tooth alignment without having to deal with the aesthetic impact and discomfort of traditional braces. However, as with any orthodontic treatment, it is essential to consult with a dentist or orthodontist to evaluate the solution best suited to your needs.
